• Clear body’s detoxification channels to allow organs and tissue to
release metabolic waste
• Rest and restore the body’s digestive system
• Recharge the body’s metabolism for increased energy and vitality
We all know we live in a toxic world. We breathe polluted air and often drink
water laden with chemicals. Most of us eat three meals (or more) each day.
Often, before one meal can be digested, processed and repackaged, another meal is on the way. Our
system barely gets a break. Our stomach, liver and kidneys are working overtime, as are our intestines.
In addition to the “good stuff” we are introducing to the body, there is also a lot of “junk” - bad food,
chemicals, preservatives, food colorings, etc. In most cases we treat our digestive system as an “in
basket”. We put food on top of food, without allowing for complete utilization of nutrients and elimination
of waste.
Science has confirmed that there is a clear connection between our mind and body. Neurochemicals
that govern our moods are produced in the colon, the primary collection bin of toxic overload. Consequently,
when our body is cleansed, our psyche and spirit are also unburdened.
A One Week Detox Program is a great way to renew energy. When we rest our system, we give it a
chance to restore its efficiency and integrity. Resting the digestive system has long been recognized
for its role in restoring health. It allows spent, worn out cells to flow out of the body, making way for
the formation of new cells in a less toxic environment. Eliminating toxins can give the body a chance to
reprogram itself.
What is a toxin?
A toxin is basically any substance that creates irritating and/or harmful effects in our body that undermines our
“state of wellness” and stresses our normal biochemical and organ functions. Toxins damage the body in an
insidious and cumulative way. Once the detoxification system becomes overloaded, toxic metabolites
accumulate and sensitivity to other chemicals, some of which might not normally be toxic, becomes
progressively greater. This accumulation of toxins wreaks havoc on our normal metabolic processes. A state of
toxicity exists when our body takes in more than it can utilize and/or eliminate, upstaging our normal state of
balance called homeostasis.
Our body has five primary detoxification systems:
1. Respiratory, including the bronchial tubes, lungs, nose, throat, sinuses.
2. Gastrointestinal, including the liver, gallbladder, G.I. tract, and colon.
3. Urinary, including the kidneys, bladder, and urethra.
4. Dermal, including the skin’s sweat and sebaceous glands.
5. Lymphatic, including the lymph channels, and lymph nodes.
Detox PLUS provides nutrients that can support the body’s detoxification systems
Alpha Lipoic Acid
This sulfur-containing compound is a critical cofactor in the production of cellular energy. Alpha lipoic acid not only
improves metabolism, it also protects the body against harmful by-products of metabolism.
Alpha lipoic acid has the unique ability to act as a potent antioxidant in both intracellular and extracellular fluid,
neutralizing free radicals generated from toxic compounds such as cigarette smoke, fried foods, excessive sun
exposure, car exhaust and environmental pollution.
With its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, alpha lipoic acid also serves as a powerful antioxidant in the brain
(Sahelian 1998).
One of the most beneficial aspects of alpha lipoic acid is its ability to regenerate other essential antioxidants,
including vitamins C & E, coenzyme Q10 and glutathione. Moreover, alpha lipoic acid can regenerate vitamin C from its
oxidized form, dehydroascorbic acid, and increase levels of glutathione, one of our most important antioxidants.
N-Acetylcysteine
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the acetylated form of L-cysteine, which is more efficiently absorbed and used. NAC helps
the body convert and synthesize glutathione, an amino acid compound that consists of glycine, l-glutamic acid, and lcysteine.
It provides significant protection against a broad array of modern toxins. These include acrolein (found in
tobacco smoke and auto exhaust), paraquat (a toxic herbicide), and the side effects of cyclophosphamide and
adriamycin, anti-cancer drugs, and halothane, an anesthetic. N-acetylcysteine is a vital antioxidant that demonstrates
characteristics including the scavenging of potent hydroxyl radicals and the diminished production of hydrogen
peroxide (Yul 2001).
Calcium D-glucarate
D-glucarate has been found to support the glucuronidation detoxification process. D-glucarate is a natural substance
produced in small amounts by mammals, including humans, and some plants. Dietary sources of D-glucarate
include different fruits and vegetables. The highest amounts are found in apples, grapefruits, cherries, apricots,
broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and alfalfa sprouts. Researchers at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center discovered Dglucarate
and have developed a patented form for use in dietary supplements.
In experimental animal studies, D-glucarate has been shown to decrease lung, skin, breast and colon cancers by
60% or more (Cancer Research Center n.d.). D-glucarate has been found to effectively prevent the induction of
prostate cancer in men. This mechanism appears to be the ability of D-glucarate to detoxify carcinogens and
androgens (Cancer Research Center n.d.).
Ellagic Acid (Standardized 40%)
Ellagic Acid is a cancer-preventing compound found in red raspberries, strawberries, pomegranate, and other fruits.
Epidemiological studies show that people who consume fruits high in ellagic acid have lower rates of cancer and heart
disease. European studies demonstrate that ellagic acid promotes wound healing and may reduce or reverse chemically
induced liver fibrosis (Life Extension 2001).
Rosemary Extract (Standardized 6%)
Rosmarinic, carnosic, and ursolic acids are phytochemicals found in rosemary leaves. They are exceptional antioxidants
in that they act in a cascading effect. Carnosic acid starts this cascade by finding and neutralizing a free radical. It is then
transformed into another molecule, called carnosol, which, in turn, neutralizes another free radical. This cascade continues
in the same way through metabolites rosmanol and galdosol, ultimately neutralizing a host of free radicals. The cascade
is probably why rosemary has a significantly higher antioxidant capability than vitamin E which after quenching a free
radical, must be recycled before it can quench another.
Numerous laboratory studies indicate that rosemary can prevent cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens) from binding
to and possible mutating cellular DNA, two of the earliest steps in cancer development (Haung, et al. 1994) (Debersac,
et al. 2001) (Al-Sereiti, et al. 1999).
Indole-3 Carbinol
The Brassica family (cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower) contains phytochemical constituents that
stimulate both Phase I and Phase II detoxification enzymes. One such compound is indole-3-carbinol. It serves as a very
active stimulant of detoxifying enzymes in the gut and the liver (Beecher 1994).
Indole-3-carbinol is available as a dietary supplement and should be taken with a large amount of water to facilitate the
removal of toxins and carcinogenic substances.

Amino Acids
Amino Acid conjugation requires glycine, glutamine, or taurine.
Glycine functions in the conjugation of aromatic acids (i.e. benzoic to hippuric acid).
Taurine functions in acylations (i.e. bile conjugations)
Glutamine is a precursor for the syntheses of amino acids, proteins, nucleotides, glutathione, and other biologically important
molecules. A glutamine deficiency can occur during periods of metabolic stress. This has led to the reclassification of glutamine
as a conditionally essential amino acid (Hall, et al. 1996).
TMG (trimethylglycine)
TMG, also known as anhydrous betaine, is found in a variety of plant and animal sources and is used in the conversion of
homocysteine to methionine. Maintaining normal homocysteine levels is important for the health of the cardiovascular system.
TMG has been shown to help protect the liver and raise S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) levels in animal studies. Trimethylglycine
is a potent remethylation agent derived from sugar beets. The “tri” means there are three methyl groups on each glycine molecule
that can be transferred to homocysteine to remethylate it into methionine and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM). This remethylation or
detoxification of homocysteine requires the following cofactors: folic acid, vitamin B6 , vitamin B12, zinc, and TMG (Life Extension
Magazine. 2004).
Fiber
Dietary fiber plays a crucial role in the proper elimination of toxic waste products from the body. Any detox or cleansing program
should be supported by increasing the amount of dietary fiber to a minimum of 30 grams a day. Increasing your total fiber
consumption to 50 grams per day will insure a more thorough internal cleansing. This dietary fiber should consist of both soluble
and insoluble fiber. Fiber will add bulk to the stool, reduce transit time, absorb and sweep away fat and toxins, and make
elimination effortless and complete. During a detox program the body needs the additional fiber to absorb the excess bile salts,
mucus, and waste products that are being released. Water soluble fibers such as guar gum, oat bran, and pectin, psyllium and
digestive resistant dextrins (maltodextrin) are recommended. |

Questions & Answers
Can you lose weight on a Detoxification Program?
Many people can follow the basics of weight loss with great results: Simply stated, eat less than you need and
unwanted pounds will drop off! Weight gain is the result of eating more than our body needs.
When weight loss is not this simple, releasing cellular waste products can often allow the body to correct
metabolic challenges, including the regulation of blood sugar or thyroid imbalances, which are often at the
root of weight problems.
How long can you stay on a Detoxification Program?
Your daily Wellness Program should always include foods and/or supplements that support the body’s daily
detoxification. For example, adequate water, fiber and antioxidants are key dietary components that promote
the daily release of metabolic and environmental toxins.
When restoring health requires an extensive detoxification program, it is recommended that you work with
a health care professional with knowledge about the body’s detoxification systems.
